DOJACANNABISUS is made by cannabis lovers, and we have been in this for many years. Our expert team will always be
Vermicompost has been widely used in agriculture and gardening throughout the world for more than 10,000 years.
It belongs to the group of enriched substrates for marijuana , as it contains the physical characteristics of compost and compost at the same time.
The regenerative power that these annelids have on soils has been recognized on different continents,
being its action today irreplaceable on soils of all kinds, all over the earth.
In nature, worms create galleries in the soil, making it porous and oxygenated,
at the same time they deposit their stools rich in organic matter in it.
This makes the soil loose and does not cake easily after the rains and waterings,
increasing its water retention power, microbial life, and the level of nutrients available in mother earth.
Its content in organic matter, humic and fulvic acids, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, enzymes, trace elements and amino acids,
It is a rich cocktail of nutrients that balances the flora of the soil, while nourishing it with organic minerals and decomposing microbes.
How to make worm castings?
The Art of vermiculture has been recognized by ancient and modern civilizations, and respect for worms was mandatory in ancient Egypt.
Alli Cleopatra described it as a sacred animal, prohibited its extraction and handling, with the maximum penalty.
Aristotle already quoted about them: »They are the gut of the earth» referring to their mobility in the ground, and the improvement that he experiences with them.
Charles Darwin became interested in them and in 1881 wrote a book entitled »The formation of vegetable mold, through the action of worms«, in this book Darwin indicates:
“The plow is one of the oldest and most useful inventions of man, but long before he existed, the earth was regularly and continuously plowed by worms. Probably man will one day recognize the gigantic work that these annelids carry out ”.
Charles Darwin was not wrong, because today earthworm humus is used in agriculture in all countries,
as a soil improver, to regulate its pH, and provide high quality microbes and nutrients.
It is produced in a sustainable way, since worms in addition to the earth, can feed on different vegetables and organic matter.
What is worm castings?
Worm castings are the depositions of certain types of worms, rich in many substances that help stabilize the pH,
return beneficial microbes, provide organic minerals, and increase soil water retention.
Worm humus is practically a soil improver fertilizer, which improves its biochemical and physical conditions,
incorporating nutrients and microorganisms that increase its richness and content in available minerals.
What is worm castings for?
Worm castings are widely used in agriculture of all kinds, as a reclaimer of spent soils, as a pH stabilizer,
as a form of organic addition of minerals, and to balance the microflora damaged by intensive crops and chemical fertilizers.
Here are 10 special properties of humus in crops:
1º Soil detoxifier . Land contaminated by repeated use of chemical fertilizers and heavy metals, reactivates them with its micro-organic richness, humic and fulvic acids.
2º Increases water retention . With its addiction, the earth absorbs and retains water for a longer time.
3rd Microbiological revitalizer . Its richness in regulatory and nutrient transforming microorganisms will not only improve their availability, but will also increase them, helping any unsuitable mineral to be suitable for plants.
4th Saving of irrigation water . By increasing the water retention capacity, it lasts longer on the ground, thus avoiding many risks.
5th Stabilizes the pH . With its neutral pH, it avoids alterations in the root environment, stabilizing it.
6th Increase defenses . By providing microorganisms, these with their action protect the roots of various diseases.
7º Improve the structure of the land . It adds physical porosity and makes the soil looser.
8th Improvement of the flavor of the fruits . Increases the level of sugars in plants, generating very sweet fruits.
9th Powerful rooting . Plants take root easily due to having a rich and balanced soil, rich in microorganisms.
10th 100% organic fertilization . Its organic nutrients are capable of balancing the soil, providing it with 100% organic mineral wealth,
your plants will have what is necessary for a good development and fruiting.
All these properties as a whole, improve the quality of the crops, improving the adaptation and resources of the plants,
because with the humus they will have everything they need for their best cultivation and harvest.
How to make worm castings?
It is its special composition, offered by Mother Earth, which gives it these special and broad qualities in terms of the diversity of such beneficial compounds.
Worm humus properties
Vermicompost has many properties and is rich in various minerals.
Its high content of humic and fulvic acids, ensures an optimal anion / cation exchange,
improving the decomposition and oxidation of organic matter, in easily absorbed mineral chelates.
It can hold up to 8% of Phosphorus and Calcium, 2.5% of Magnesium and Nitrogen, in addition to Copper, Sodium, Iron and Manganese.
With this excellent ratio of nutrients and organic acids, earthworm humus is postulated as a powerful soil conditioner and recuperator.
How do humic acids act in soils?
Humic acids perform a very important work in the soil, both physical and chemical, all beneficial for soil and plants.
In heavy clay soils they help aerate them and improve their structure, increasing their permeability.
In light and sandy soils , with little organic matter, humic acids permeate the sand grains,
increase the cation exchange capacity (CEC) and increase the water retention capacity,
thus avoiding the loss of nutrients by leaching.
In acid soils it tends to neutralize them . With this, humates fix and immobilize some toxic elements in acidic media such as heavy metals, reducing their toxicity.
In alkaline soils, it forms complexes, buffering the high pH and consequently allows macro and trace elements,
may be in a form available to plants.
In very dry soils , humic acids tend to increase the moisture-holding capacity of the soil.
On saline soils, it facilitates the release of elements such as Calcium and Magnesium, cations that bind and form chelates.
How to prepare homemade worm humus?
The earthworm humus can be produced at a domestic level, we will only need space, plant matter and worms to obtain it.
Californian worm humus, known as California red worm (Eisenia Foetida), has an ideal composition,
to be used in agriculture.
Among the different species of worms that are used to make humus are, Eisenia Foetida, Eisenia andrei, Eisenia hortensis, Perionyx excavatus, Eudrilus eugeniae, Dendrobaena veneta, Lumbricus rubellus, Lumbricus castaneus, Polypheretima elongata, Amynthas rodericens, Amynthas hawaderiana.
All are suitable for the production of humus, but Eisenia Foetida and Lumbricus Rubellus are the most resistant to low temperatures,
and those that best adapt to any climate.
Both give high quality humus, but L. Rubellus creates odorless humus, unlike Eisenia Fétida which gives strong smelling humus.
Foreign earthworm species also serve us although their reproduction may be slower, and their humus production lower.
How to grow earthworms for compost?
Already with our California red worms, we will need a hole in the rock, or a large plastic container,
from where they cannot escape, the purpose is to deposit in it the vegetable remains of our food, vegetables, manure, leaves, compost, etc …
Hatchery of worms and humus in the bedrock, prevents them from escaping
We will create an amalgam of decomposing organic remains, which we will always keep moist in order to facilitate their degradation,
so that the worms have food that is easy to swallow, as in the same way as on earth, they need constant humidity in their environment.
The use of manure notably increases the content of minerals and nutrients, being its transformation into humus very optimal.
Especially if we want to produce humus in sufficient quantity, and with the domestic waste we do not have enough to obtain it.
In the image you can see the worms enveloping the organic waste, the darkest matter is the humus
We can do it with a blue rigid plastic tank, the kind used in industry, cut them in half lengthwise.
Drill one on its curved base, with a fine drill, 2-3 mm maximum and place it on the other at a distance of 20 cm.
In the upper one we will place the worms with the organic remains, and cover with a cloth or a flat wooden or plastic lid,
so that the light does not enter, because the worms require darkness, as when they are underground.
When watering with a watering can to hydrate, the leachate liquids will fall through the small holes that we made to the lower tank,
as well as humus particles, this we can collect and use in irrigation in our plants.
How to make worm castings?
Maintenance of worms and collection of humus:
The tank above will contain the humus and worms, when they have eaten a large part of the organic matter,
we can separate them from the humus, and put them with new organic matter, if it is in decomposition or fermentation better,
and we will begin another cycle of humus production.
This we can replicate in various deposits, or holes made in the rock soil, or construction so that they do not escape,
the important thing is to keep them confined while they reproduce and eat, so that they generate abundant humus.
California earthworms feeding on vegetable waste
They will enter a reproduction wheel, in which each time we will have more worms, and these will be able to generate a lot of humus,
so that we can use it in our crops.
Worm humus for marijuana
Marijuana plants respond with satisfaction to the addiction of humus to the substrate or soil,
as it conditions the soil with its composition.
Plants and their roots respond with vigor and health to the use of earthworm humus,
improving its development, structure, nutrition and defenses.
Incorporated in holes in soil or pots, it will increase water retention, and will make us not have to water as often,
which is interesting in hot areas, where in summer it is necessary to water every day,
with the addition of humus the waterings will be more spaced.
The flavor and intensity of the fruits is substantially improved, due to their organic acids, natural nutrients,
your buds will taste sweeter and nuanced in aromas.
Fertilize with worm castings
When fertilizing with humus, we not only incorporate nutrients into the soil or substrate, but we also add substances with high restructuring potential.
The amount can be high, because its balanced nutrient content will prevent your plants from burning due to excess,
But 20-30% should be put into the hole or pot of humus in the soil, in order to obtain the best results.
Worm humus quantity per pot
The amount of humus per pot must be equal in proportion when mixing with the substrate, to take full advantage of its benefits.
Nor should this amount be exceeded by much, as it could weigh down clay soils too much, and hinder oxygenation of the roots.
Mix worm humus and coconut fiber
Coconut fiber cultivation does not require the mandatory addition of humus, since Calcium and other stabilizers are usually added,
but it can also be added as a corrector and stabilizer that prevents different deficiencies.
We can grow with coconut and humus, respecting the natural aeration that due to its granulometry and porosity will confer the coconut
to the resulting mixture, 10-15% humus will be more than enough.
The humus will stabilize the pH of the coconut, reinforcing it against calcium and magnesium deficiencies, adding an extra organic matter,
and slow release nutrients.
How to mix worm castings with soil?
Depending on the type of soil, we must apply a certain amount of humus, to obtain the best results.
If you add it to holes in the mother earth, you can incorporate it every year, between winter and spring ,
so that it releases its nutrients and stabilizes and reactivates its organic wealth.
We will add between 20-30% of humus to the soil, mixing it with a hoe, or a tool that helps in this task.
We can also apply it as a superficial fertilizer, removing the superficial part of the earth so that it mixes and homogenizes,
and that it is dragged and mobilized with each irrigation.
How to prepare liquid worm humus?
The use of leachates from humus is the best way to prepare earthworm humus,
since the concentrates in it are made in fertilizer companies, where they are transformed and concentrated through reactions.
But collecting the humus from the leachate will be of great help if we add it in the usual irrigations,
because despite not providing many nutrients, it has a large amount of bacteria and natural enzymes,
that will increase the development of our plants.
We can also make hummus tea, with solid hummus, an air pump or a tank and water.
With it we will obtain explosive growths, due to its high content of microorganisms that will increase the vigor and health of your plants.
You can add other enriched substrates together with the worm humus, such as the Atami Upgrade with enough food for 3 months,
also add the Complete Organics of Guanokalong or bird guano, and get a totally natural and organic harvest, free of chemicals.
All In One Guerrilla is a powder fertilizer with enough nutrients for 6 months of cultivation ,
in which your plants will have the best organic food to develop to the maximum and give a great harvest,
Combined with humus it will further reinforce the functions and diets of your plants, ensuring optimal harvests of superior quality.
Do not lose sight of Plagron’s organic fertilizers , with which you can organize a special and long-lasting mixture,
that will cover your expectations and fill your pantry with incredible and delicious harvests of buds.
Any combination of organic fertilizers that you make together with the humus, will restore life and balance to your lands,
incorporating bacteria and beneficial organisms, transforming and releasing nutrients continuously,
so you can enjoy growing your plants for many years.
